Gemini Code Assist Review: Free Coding AI That Is Now a Contender
Gemini Code Assist competes on the two things incumbents ignored: price and generous limits. The quality has now caught up to the pitch.

Verdict
Gemini Code Assist is the value champion of coding assistants: an unusually generous free tier and pricing that undercuts the incumbents, wrapped around model quality that now genuinely competes. It is not the most powerful agent and its IDE experience trails the polished leaders, but for individuals and teams watching budgets, it is the smartest choice on the market.
For a long time, choosing a coding assistant meant choosing between Copilot and Cursor and paying accordingly. Gemini Code Assist has spent the last year undercutting both while quietly improving its models, and the result is the best value in the category. I used it daily for real work to test whether the savings come with real costs.
The strengths
Pricing that rewrites the market
A genuinely useful free tier with limits measured in thousands of completions and chat requests, and paid pricing well below the leaders. For the same budget you get far more assistant.
Quality that now competes
Completion relevance, chat answers and multi-file reasoning are solidly in the top tier. The gap that used to excuse the price premium has largely closed.
Enterprise control
Data governance, on-prem options and org-wide policy controls make it attractive for large companies that care where their code goes.
The weaknesses
Agent polish trails the leaders
The autonomous agent features work but feel less refined than the dedicated agent-first tools. Complex multi-file autonomy is where it still shows its age.
IDE experience lags
The plugin experience is good but not as slick as the incumbents — smaller touches, occasional friction, fewer ecosystem hooks.
Who it is for
- Budget-conscious developers: best capability per dollar, period.
- Students and hobbyists: a serious assistant that costs nothing.
- Large enterprises: governance-first AI at scale.
The verdict
Gemini Code Assist is the value champion of coding assistants: an unusually generous free tier and pricing that undercuts the incumbents, wrapped around model quality that now genuinely competes. It is not the most powerful agent and its IDE experience trails the polished leaders, but for individuals and teams watching budgets, it is the smartest choice on the market.
