Outside AWS it is a competent but unremarkable assistant. For teams deep in the Amazon ecosystem it is close to essential; for everyone else it is an also-ran with good bones.
Amazon Q Developer has been quietly improving while the coding-assistant wars raged elsewhere. I tested it the honest way: both as a generic assistant in my IDE and as an AWS-native tool working across accounts and infrastructure. The gap between those two experiences is the whole review.
The strengths
Deep AWS awareness
It understands your account, resources and architecture. Ask it to debug a Lambda, review a CloudFormation template or explain a billing surprise, and it answers with real context rather than generic advice.
Agent that actually completes tasks
