Amazon Q Developer is the strongest coding assistant if your world is AWS: it understands your infrastructure, can transform code across accounts, and its agent is genuinely useful for real tasks. Outside AWS it is a competent but unremarkable assistant. For teams deep in the Amazon ecosystem it is close to essential; for everyone else it is an also-ran with good bones.
Amazon Q Developer has been quietly improving while the coding-assistant wars raged elsewhere. I tested it the honest way: both as a generic assistant in my IDE and as an AWS-native tool working across accounts and infrastructure. The gap between those two experiences is the whole review.
The strengths
Deep AWS awareness
It understands your account, resources and architecture. Ask it to debug a Lambda, review a CloudFormation template or explain a billing surprise, and it answers with real context rather than generic advice.
Agent that actually completes tasks
The agent mode can plan and execute multi-step changes — including infrastructure-as-code work — with less hand-holding than many rivals. Transformation across a codebase is genuinely useful.
Strong free tier
A generous free tier means you can evaluate it seriously before paying, which is rarer in this category than it should be.
The weaknesses
Generic outside AWS
Strip away the AWS context and it is a middle-of-the-pack assistant. If you are not an AWS shop, the differentiators vanish.
AWS-centric learning curve
The best features assume you think in Amazon terms — services, accounts, roles. Developers without that mental model will not get the magic.
