Function Calling

Letting a model request a specific external tool or API with structured arguments.

Last updated

Function calling lets a language model output a structured request instead of prose. The application executes that request, returns the result and the model continues. It is how assistants retrieve live data, run calculations or update records reliably, and it is the foundation of most useful agentic workflows.
