A large model pre-trained on broad data that can be adapted to many downstream tasks.

Last updated

A foundation model is trained once at scale, then reused through prompting, fine-tuning or retrieval for a wide range of applications. This shift from task-specific models to general ones is what made modern AI development fast and accessible. Examples include large language models and general vision models.
