Perplexity Review: The Answer Engine That Replaced My Search Bar

Search engines give you links and make you read. Chatbots give you answers you cannot verify. Perplexity sits between them: it searches the live web and answers with citations you can click. After six weeks of using it for everything from product research to debugging questions, I have a clear picture of where it wins and where it falls short.

The strengths

Citations change everything

Every claim carries sources. When an answer matters — pricing, a release date, a spec — you verify in one click instead of trusting a black box. That accountability is why it has become my default research tool.

Fast, current answers

Because it searches live, you get up-to-date information without a knowledge cutoff. For anything that changed recently, it is dramatically more reliable than a static chatbot.

Research that builds

Follow-up questions refine the thread, and the agentic search mode goes deeper automatically — fetching, reading and synthesising across many sources. For briefs it is a serious head start.

The weaknesses

Thin on deep expertise

Ask something that lives in long specialised documents and it skims. It excels at breadth and currency, not at depth — a paper's nuance or a codebase's specifics need a specialist tool.

Occasionally overconfident sources

The sources are real, but it sometimes cites a page that only vaguely supports the claim. The citations are a safety net, not a guarantee — you still read when it matters.

The verdict

Perplexity is the fastest way from a question to a cited answer that exists. It has quietly replaced traditional search for a large share of my research, and the new agentic depth makes it more than a clever search box. It still struggles with very technical depth, but for most questions nothing is faster.
