Adobe Firefly Review: Commercially Safe AI for Creative Professionals
Firefly wins the argument that matters most to professionals: commercial safety. Inside Photoshop, the AI tools are quietly excellent.

Verdict
Firefly is the commercially responsible choice for creative professionals: trained on licensed content, safe for client work, and deeply integrated into Photoshop and Illustrator where the real magic happens. As a standalone generator it lags the leaders on raw image quality, but as a tool inside a professional workflow it is unmatched.
Ask a working designer which AI image tool they trust with client work and the answer is often Firefly — not because it produces the most striking images, but because it was trained on licensed content and Adobe will stand behind it commercially. I tested both halves of the product: the standalone generator and the AI features embedded in Photoshop and Illustrator.
The strengths
Commercially safe by design
Trained on licensed and public-domain content, with indemnification for commercial use. For brands, agencies and anyone with legal exposure, that changes the calculus entirely.
Generative Fill in Photoshop is the killer app
Select an area, describe the replacement, and it blends seamlessly into the existing image. Extending backgrounds, removing objects, cleaning up photos — this is the most used AI feature in professional design for a reason.
Integrated where pros work
Firefly is not another tab to babysit. It is inside the tools professionals already use, with proper layers, masks and output control when you need them.
The weaknesses
Generation quality trails the leaders
Standalone prompts produce competent but conservative images. Against Midjourney's aesthetics or the precision of the best models, Firefly the generator loses.
Cost of admission
The good features are tied to Creative Cloud subscriptions. If you are not already paying for Adobe, Firefly alone is rarely worth the price.
Who it is for
- Designers and agencies: client-safe generative tools inside the apps you already use.
- Brand teams: indemnification removes the legal anxiety of AI imagery.
- Photo editors: Generative Fill alone justifies a subscription.
The verdict
Firefly is the commercially responsible choice for creative professionals: trained on licensed content, safe for client work, and deeply integrated into Photoshop and Illustrator where the real magic happens. As a standalone generator it lags the leaders on raw image quality, but as a tool inside a professional workflow it is unmatched.
