System Prompt
High-level instructions that set a model's role, tone and rules before any user message.

A system prompt establishes persistent behaviour for a conversation. Product teams use it to define the assistant's persona, boundaries and output conventions. Because it outranks ordinary user messages in most APIs, it is the right place for safety rules, formatting requirements and the definition of what the assistant should refuse.
