Midjourney vs DALL-E vs Stable Diffusion: Image Model Showdown
The same 15 prompts, three model families, 200 generated images. We grade them on prompt adherence, aesthetics, text rendering and control.

Verdict
Midjourney for looks, Stable Diffusion for control, DALL-E for reliability. Choose by workflow, not hype.
We generated 200 images across Midjourney, DALL-E and Stable Diffusion using 15 identical prompts, then scored them on aesthetics, prompt adherence, text rendering, speed and control. The results explain the whole market in one table.
How we tested
Fifteen prompts spanning styles — photorealistic portraits, product shots, text-heavy graphics, illustrations, architectural scenes. Each model family got the same prompt, up to four attempts, and we scored the best result to be fair to the stochastic nature of image generation.
Aesthetics
Midjourney won on pure beauty. Its default output has a cinematic, designed quality that the others rarely match without heavy prompt tuning. If the image just needs to look stunning, Midjourney is the answer.
DALL-E produced clean, competent images that rarely wow. Stable Diffusion depends entirely on the checkpoint — a great model gives great images, but the default experience is variable.
Prompt adherence
DALL-E was the most obedient: it followed the instruction closely, including specific counts and spatial relations, with the fewest bizarre interpretations. Midjourney interprets creatively — sometimes wonderfully, sometimes missing the brief. Stable Diffusion adherence ranges from excellent to poor depending on the checkpoint and prompt.
Text rendering
Text in images is the classic weak spot. DALL-E rendered readable text most reliably. Midjourney handles short words well and longer phrases with errors. Stable Diffusion is weak at text without specialised models — plan around it.
Speed and control
Stable Diffusion is the control champion: seeds, ControlNet, inpainting, LoRA, local and free. If you need a repeatable pipeline, there is no real alternative. Midjourney and DALL-E are fast and easy but give you far fewer dials.
The verdict
Choose by workflow, not hype:
- Midjourney for marketing images and aesthetics-first work.
- DALL-E for reliable prompt adherence, text and ease of use.
- Stable Diffusion for control, customisation and local pipelines.
Most professionals use more than one. The models are complements: one for ideation, one for execution, one for control.
